چکیده

The overall dimensions of the carotid sinus, the thicknesses of the individual layers within its wall, and the tissue composition of the tunica media were measured on histological sections of the carotid bifurcation fixed in vivo in anesthetized dogs, cats, and rabbits. The outstanding dimensional features of the carotid sinus as compared to the adjoining carotid segments are its thinned media-intima layer and increased ratio of internal radius to media-intima thickness. These differences carry a high level of significance statistically. There appears to be no marked increase in the ratio of radius to whole-wall thickness in the sinus portion of the carotid tree. The tunica media in the carotid sinus wall contains more than twice as much elastic tissue per unit volume (mean value 62.3% elasrin) as the media in the carotid vessels adjoining the sinus; reciprocally, smooth muscle constitutes 16.4% of the tunica media in the sinus wall but approximately 50!S or more of the media in the common, internal, and external carotid arteries caudal and cranial to the sinus (mean values in percent of total volume). Results are discussed in relation to the position of the baroreceptors within the sinus wall and mechanisms of stimulating them. ADDITIONAL

Presentation of a Non-invasive Method of Estimating Arterial Stiffness by Modeling Blood Flow and Arterial Wall Based on the Determination of Elastic Module of Arterial Wall

Introduction: Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of cardiovascular risk. Several indices have been  introduced to estimate the arterial stiffness based on the changes in the brachial blood pressure. Since the  substitution  of  the  blood  pressure  changes  in  the  central  arteries  such  as  carotid  with  the  blood  pressure  changes in the brachial results in error in the blood...

Observations on the structure and innervation of the presumptive carotid sinus area in the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis).

The tunica media of the giraffe carotid artery is characterised by a predominantly muscular structure, except for a small area at the origins of the occipital and the vestigal internal carotid arteries. The latter has a preponderantly elastic structure and corresponds in extent to the parts of the carotid arterial wall innervated by a branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve. Sensory nerve terminal...

Effect of Digitalis on Carotid Sinus Baroreceptor Activity

The effect of intracarotid injections of ouabain (25.0 ng) or acetylstrophanthidin (1.56 tig) on feline carotid sinus baroreceptors was evaluated using an isolated perfused carotid sinus preparation. The effects of the drugs on baroreceptor activity were determined by monitoring carotid sinus nerve activity and systemic arterial blood pressure. Administration of either drug to the isolated caro...

Carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex in dogs with experimental heart failure.

We have previously demonstrated a decrease in baroreceptor discharge sensitivity in dogs with experimental heart failure. In the present study, we determined the sensitivity of the carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex in dogs with pacing-induced heart failure. The carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex sensitivity was determined by pressurizing one carotid sinus with all other baroreceptor and cardiopu...
